TMJ/TMD

December 14th, 2011

Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is any disorder that affects the proper functioning of your temporomandibular joint (TMJ). TMD is one of the most commonly overlooked causes of chronic headaches, but can also result in problems including:

  • Lockjaw
  • Facial tenderness and swelling
  • Difficulties chewing
  • Neck and backaches
  • Postural problems
  • Decreased energy

Improper alignment of your jaw can also lead to dental issues such as uneven wear on your teeth. During your biannual examinations with one of our Calgary neuromuscular dentists, your jaw and bite are evaluated to catch early signs of TMD before it begins to cause serious problems.

Treating TMD

To treat TMD, your jaw needs to be realigned. At Aesthetic Dental Studio, we have found that the best way to treat TMD is with the Pure Power Mouthguard (PPM). PPM is custom created for each patient to address the specific needs of your jaw. Your customized PPM will work to place your jaw in a more forward and down position. Worn at night, PPM gradually realigns your jaw into its optimal position while also increasing oxygen flow, relaxing muscles, and relieving the painful symptoms of TMD.

If you live in or around Calgary, Alberta, Northwest Calgary, or Airdrie and are suffering from TMD, please contact the neuromuscular dentists at Aesthetic Dental Studio to schedule an initial consultation today.

Dental Health

October 14th, 2011

The health of your mouth is important to the health of your entire body. Even for small children, dental health should be a daily consideration. The sugary and starchy foods in the common diet feed bacteria whose colonies are the plaque on your teeth. When they eat, the bacteria make acid that leads to dental issues such as gum disease and tooth decay. A proper oral hygiene routine is necessary in removing this daily buildup. It takes around 48 hours for plaque to harden, and once hardened it turns into tartar, which is much more difficult to remove.

Ensuring Dental Health

The easiest way to keep your teeth and gums healthy is with a thorough at-home oral hygiene routine. Taking care to brush your teeth and floss after every meal, or at least twice a day, will help prevent plaque and tarter buildup. Remember, brushing removes plaque from the surface of your teeth, but plaque in between your teeth and at your gum line can only be removed by taking time to floss.

An at-home routine is important in maintaining good dental health, but alone cannot remove all of the plaque from your mouth. Visiting Aesthetic Dental Studio every six months for professional cleanings is an essential part of keeping you teeth and gums healthy and decay free.

If you live in or around Calgary, Alberta, Northwest Calgary, or Airdrie and are interested in learning more about dental health, please contact the experienced dentists at Aesthetic Dental Studio to schedule a professional cleaning today.

The LVI Difference

September 26th, 2011

The Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies, abbreviated LVI, is the premiere post graduate dental training facility in North America. Dentists from all over Canada, the United States, and other parts of the world seek training at LVI in order to obtain “the LVI difference” for their own practice. LVI takes a holistic approach to dentistry, which is why their students are so successful.

They produce dental practices and teams geared towards providing a high quality experience for all of their patients. Not only are the dentists well trained in a number of practice fields like:

They also provide training for office personnel and technicians. By getting the entire team on board with the overall scope and vision of the practice, dentist offices can better care for patients and actually make going to the dentist a pleasant experience.

While some general dentists can help you take care of many of your dental needs like cleanings and fillings, an LVI practice can usually do that and more. You will not need to go to a separate facility to take care of additional dental issues such as TMD treatment or cosmetic dentistry; they can all be done an LVI office.

To find our more about the LVI difference, please contact the Alberta smile makeover dentists at Aesthetic Dental Studio for an initial consultation.

Snore Guard

August 8th, 2011

Snoring can be an annoying problem, especially for your spouse. Although you probably do not think you snore, there is approximately a 45% chance that you do. Snoring can be a sign of a serious medical condition like sleep apnea, or it may just be an annoyance. When you snore, it interrupts the deep sleep you need to recuperate.

Snoring starts as your body starts to relax. When the muscles and tissues in the back of you through go slack, they sometimes interfere with air passing through your mouth and nose to your lungs, giving off those rattling sounds. Snoring typically worsens as you age and if not treated may lead to some serious health problems, like:

  • High blood pressure
  • Insomnia
  • Daytime fatigue

If you feel tired throughout the day, it may be because your nights are not as restful as they should be. With a snore guard mouthpiece fitted by a dentist, you can reduce snoring and improve your breathing at night.

With a snore guard fitted by your dentist, the mouth is kept in such a position to open up the airway for sufficient airflow. The nights will be more restful for you and your partner. To find out more about snoring treatment options, please contact an experienced dentist at Aesthetic Dental Studio in Calgary today.

Questions about Endodontics

August 1st, 2011

While most dentists receive training in endodontic treatments during regular dental school, many go on to become specialists in endodontics. When tooth decay progresses beyond the enamel and through the dentin into the pulp chamber, endodontic treatment is required to repair the tooth. This procedure is commonly called a root canal. Here are some answers to the questions about endodontics you may have.

Why do I need a Root Canal?

Inside each tooth is the tooth pulp, which consists of the nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissues of the tooth. This is the supply line for a living tooth. When the integrity of the tooth is breached through decay or fracture, the tooth pulp is removed and the tooth is deadened to prevent further destruction.

Are there other Endodontic Procedures?

If you have an abscess below the root line, it may not be practical to drill through the enamel and dentin portions of your tooth. Instead, it may be better to reach the abscess through the side, remove the abscess, and root tip in a procedure called apicoectomy.

Do I Ever Need Another Root Canal on the Same Tooth?

In most cases, a root canal procedure is permanent. The tooth is no longer living and cannot feel any pain, because there is no nerve. The root canal, the space formerly occupied by the pulp is filled in with special rubber filler. There are some instances where a second endodontic procedure must be done, but those are rare.

To find out more about endodontic surgery, and if you live in Alberta, please contact our general dentist at the Aesthetic Dental Studio to schedule an initial consultation.

Missing Teeth

June 7th, 2011

Going through life with missing teeth is not only inconvenient for chewing food it negatively affects your appearance. Fortunately, restorative dentistry with modern dental appliances and techniques, there are more options to treating missing teeth than merely fitting you with dentures. These options are not only permanent fixes; these options look better than ill-fitting dentures, which are cared for just like your regular teeth.

There are many reasons for teeth to go missing, including:

  • Trauma
  • Excessive decay
  • Gum disease

Dental bridges are frequently used to fill the gap created by a missing tooth. A bridge fills this gap by crowning the tooth on either side, while supporting a porcelain replacement in between. This option requires the removing significant portions of healthy teeth on either side of the gap in order to support the crowns. The underlying bone structure may continue to deteriorate because there is not stimulation where the bridge resides.

The dentist may determine that a more permanent option, dental implant should be used. With an implant, a titanium screw is fitted into the jaw where the tooth used to reside, simulating the root structure. A custom created cap is affixed to the screw for permanent tooth replacement. Eventually, the titanium screw grows into the bone, strengthening it.

To find out more about permanent tooth replacement options for missing teeth, please contact an experienced restorative dentist at the Aesthetic Dental Studio in Calgary, Alberta for an initial consultation.

Headaches and Your Dental Bite

May 25th, 2011

Most people do not associate their recurring headaches with their teeth. There is however, a close association with various types of headaches, which are associated with the function of your jawbone. The condition, temporomandibular joint disorder or TMD, is frequently caused by the misalignment of your jaw. One of the leading symptoms of TMD is recurring headaches.

If you favor one side of your jaw when you chew, it can affect the TMJ (temporomandiular joint), stressing the muscles and affecting jaw function. Neuromuscular dentistry is a field of dentistry that treats headaches and other dentistry problems related to TMD.

The TMJ is the only joint in your body that has two sides that are designed to work in conjunction with each other. When one side is knocked out of balance, this puts undue stress on one joint when trying to compensate. There are many factors that lead to TMD:

  • Tooth pain
  • Excessive chewing
  • Tooth grinding
  • Trauma to the jawbone

Once the joint becomes stressed, it often leads to headaches. In many cases, these headaches do not seem to be associated or attributed to your teeth or jaw at all. It is important to seek the opinion of a dentist trained in neuromuscular dentistry to diagnose chronic headache pain and treat it if related to TMD.

If you suffer from unexplained chronic headaches, please contact a Northwest Calgary neuromuscular dentist at the Aesthetic Dental Studio today for a comprehensive evaluation.

If that’s not enough to help you stop snoring, Dr. Chee can fit you for a snore guard.

Even a slight misalignment of your bite can cause severe snoring. A snore guard is a customized mouth guard that keeps your teeth and jaw in optimal alignment to keep your airway open.
